The Yellow Schoolhouse Project
Proposal Informational Packet
In October 2025, the Town of Kennan has received a preservation proposal regarding the historic Yellow Schoolhouse (also known as the Four Corners School or former Kennan Town Hall), located at W11310 Highway 8.
Project Overview
The Yellow Schoolhouse is a historic one‑room school building that has not been in use since the early 1960s and is currently in deteriorating condition. A private citizen has submitted a proposal requesting the opportunity to assume ownership or long‑term stewardship of the building with the goal of restoring and preserving it as a historic landmark.
Current Status and Updates
- October 6th, 2025 Regular Board Meeting: The proposal was presented and it was agreed to include a notice in the annual tax bills and to hold a public hearing at the April 2026 Annual Town Meeting.
- April 18, 2026 Annual Town Meeting: The Town Board identified next steps to include Mrs. Arquette consulting with a company that specializes in relocating historic structures to determine the feasibility of moving the Yellow Schoolhouse to the adjoining property located at W11330 Highway 8. Relocation is the preferred option, as leaving the structure at its current location could pose safety concerns for future public visitors due to its proximity to the town garage and ongoing heavy equipment operations.
An update on this matter is expected at the May 4, 2026 Regular Town Board Meeting at 6:00 p.m.
At this time, the proposal is under review by the Town Board. No final decision has been made regarding ownership, sale, donation, or long‑term stewardship of the property. Any action related to the property will require formal consideration and approval by the Town Board at a public meeting in accordance with open meetings laws.
Updates will be posted on the Town of Kennan website as the process moves forward.
