Building permits have a few different purposes.  One purpose is for the zoning board to ensure all proposed structures are located within the proper highway setbacks and meet the ordinance guidelines with regards to the rear and side yards of the property.  Another purpose is notifying the town accessor that a change has been made.  This is important because the goal is for all properties in the town to be updated and receive equal assessments when compared to similar properties.
